Surf City, NC - Today, the Golden LEAF Board of Directors awarded $250,000 to the Town of Surf City through the Flood Mitigation Program. The funds will be used to implement a portion of the South Shore Stormwater Feasibility Study, which identified several projects that can help reduce flooding and help resolve an issue that has been ongoing for numerous years. Specifically, the project will help move stormwater that floods the road, to a new infiltration chamber system that collects and releases the stormwater back into the ground. This project will address insufficient stormwater infrastructure that causes flooding in the 2200 block of South Shore Drive, obstructing the safe passage of vehicles, including public safety personnel.
The Town has been working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to assess this area and who also helped fund and develop a feasibility study through the engineering firm WK Dickson. “This project will assist us in reducing flooding on S. Shore Dr. and we are thankful to be receiving these funds for this critical project.” – Mayor Medlin
Town Manager, Kyle Breuer says “This is a nature-based solution the Town can implement to increase its resilience to large rain events. In addition, this is a major thoroughfare that provides the only way in and out for our residents on this portion of the Island, as well as residents of Topsail Beach. A major factor in working to seek funding for this project is to assist our emergency services”.
Thank you to the Golden LEAF Foundation as well as the N.C. General Assembly for making these funds available to jurisdictions across the State. We’d also like to thank our partners at the North Carolina Department of Transportation for their assistance in helping fund the feasibility study to get us to this point.
