Status Update of Hurricane Idalia #6:
(8/30/23) The Town of Surf City remains under a Tropical Storm Warning, Flood Watch, and Rip Current Advisory. Hurricane Idalia will begin moving into our area later this afternoon, final preparations or protective actions should be completed or taken immediately. As we are starting to see rainfall associated with the system already, anticipated impacts include continued heavy rain with associated potential for localized flooding, gusty winds up to tropical storm force, potential beach erosion, and isolated tornadoes will also be possible. Additional information will be released as it becomes available. Please monitor local media outlets and credible sources
Localized impacts may include:
Rip Currents/Dangerous Surf - It is recommended that residents and visitors refrain from swimming or entering the ocean until after the storm passes and conditions improve.
Localized Flooding – Areas that typically experience flooding from excessive rainfall are expected to see impacts from the storm. Roadways may become impassible or unsafe to drive through. These areas are generally focused along S. Shore Drive, beginning in the 1300 block and areas further south, areas around the 500 block of N. New River Drive, as well as the canal streets. Additional flooding in areas may occur.
Beach Erosion – A combination of offshore impacts remaining from Hurricane Franklin as well as high tide events may contribute to storm surge affecting the Surf City coastline.
Wind Threat – Some downed trees and power outages are possible, especially late evening through the overnight hours.
Impacts to Emergency Services – Sustained winds of 45 mph or higher for two minutes or more will result in temporary suspension of emergency services traveling across the Surf City bridge.
EOC Operational Status – Key Town staff will be closely monitoring the situation in the EOC under a Partial, or Level 2, activation. Should the situation require it, we can transition to a Full, or Level 1 activation if needed.
