Status of Tropical Storm Idalia #7:

(8/30/23) As of 5PM, the National Hurricane Center has downgraded Idalia to a Tropical Storm. The Town of Surf City is continuously monitoring TS Idalia as the system moves closer to our area. Surf City is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning, Flood Watch, Tornado Watch, and Rip Current Advisory Since we are already feeling some of the effects from the system, all final emergency preparations should be completed immediately

Areas typically susceptible to flooding are expected to see impacts as we see additional rainfall overnight. Roadways may become impassible or unsafe to drive through. These areas are generally focused along S. Shore Drive, beginning in the 1300 block and areas further south, areas around the 500 block of N. New River Drive, as well as the canal streets. Additional flooding in other areas may also occur.

A combination of marine impacts from distant Hurricane Franklin as well as the King Tide could contribute to minor storm surge affecting Surf City beachesDue to the rough sea conditions, residents and visitors are strongly advised to stay out of the ocean until after the storm passes and sea conditions improve.

Some downed trees and power outages are possible, especially late evening into the overnight hours. Additionally, as is common with tropical systems, short-lived tornadoes remain a possibility. We anticipate seeing 30-40mph winds overnight, with some higher gusts possible. Sustained winds of 45 mph or higher for two minutes or more will result in temporary suspension of emergency services traveling across the Surf City bridge.

For second trash pickup customers, please do not put trash or recycling carts out on the street until after the storm has passed. GFL will maintain normal operations on Friday morning.

It is recommended everyone remain indoors and refrain from driving as much as possible. Please stay connected to official Town of Surf City updates on our website, social media, and Code Red, as well as other official forms of media and communication. We will continue to update you on the status of Idalia as we receive information   hurricaneforecast7hurricaneforecast7
